Mentee Question
How to be a Product Manager as a fresher?
Mentors Answer
Answered By Mentor Anand Kumar Ramakrishnan
Hi Ajitesh! That is a very pertinent question an becoming a Product Manager as a fresher is a great aspiration, and with the right preparation, it's definitely achievable.
Here is one way I'd think about it!
- Start Early: Begin your journey by acquiring knowledge about product management early on. This could be through books, online courses, podcasts, or webinars.
- Gain Relevant Skills: Understanding the skills required in the domain, such as Leadership & Communication, Risk Management, Empathy, Goal Setting, Active Listening, and Time Management, can give you a competitive edge. Work on developing these skills.
- Hands-On Experience: While theoretical knowledge is important, hands-on experience is crucial. Seek internships in the product management domain or take on relevant roles in college clubs or projects. This will begin to provide you with practical insights into the field.
- Networking: Establish connections with experienced Product Managers on platforms like LinkedIn. I am not sure of your schedule, but see if you can attend industry events or webinars where you can interact with professionals. This could help you gain valuable insights, get advice, and even open up opportunities.
- Mock Interviews: Practicing mock PM interviews will give you a better understanding of what potential employers look for and how to present your skills effectively. There are several online resources available for this.
Remember, your journey as a Product Manager starts with the first step of gaining knowledge and learning the ropes. It's a journey of constant learning and evolving, and if needed I am here to guide you through it.
