Learning to program, preferably in Python, is essential. Resources like Khan Academy, MIT OpenCourseWare can help you with these foundational skills. Additionally, grasp fundamental data structures and algorithms from platforms like GeeksforGeeks and HackerRank.

Once you've built a strong base, dive into machine learning basics, covering supervised and unsupervised learning, regression, classification, and clustering. Andrew Ng's Machine Learning course on Coursera and books like "Introduction to Machine Learning with Python" are excellent starting points.
