Hi Abhishek, hope you're doing well. I'm Sharanya, a Product Consultant at Cvent (an event management B2B SaaS MNC) with 1.5 years work ex. I graduated from Delhi University in a degree called BVoc Web Designing - Had a mix of BCA+BBA kinda subjects. I did a number extra curriculars like Google Developer Student Clubs, Coding Projects and Events, Women Tech Makers Ambassador etc. However, given my educational background which is quite shabby (in my honest opinion) compared to the esteemed Btech/MBA grads that go for PM roles, how practical do you think it is for me to directly pursue a PM role at a good Product Based Company (I'd not even dream of MAANG unless I have an MCA at least, but in your opinion, can I?) Do you think there are any certifications or something that can help my resume stand out without a well recognised degree or should I focus on getting an MBA/MCA right now to secure my foothold first and then go for bigger leaps? Thanks for asking that question.
I would say, given the details you shared about your profile, it will certainly be difficult but not impossible. The reason being, for majority of opportunities, it won't meet the filtering criteria (unfortunate but true). One approach that can turn the situation in your favour is by gaining knowledge and subject matter expertise in an adjacent area and target product internships, live projects or APM roles. if you get a chance, then build on it till the time experience is on your side.
Up-skilling is always a good option if your circumstances allow you. A full time degree is always more valued as compared to a part time or an executive one.
