Mentee Question

Asked by subhadip das

Hello Rishabh, I trust you're doing well! I have a background as a Software Test Engineer at a service-based firm, where I gained three years of experience. However, I do have an employment gap of more than four years. Currently, I'm in the process of learning Web Development and have previously prepared for Data Structures and Algorithms. My goal is to transition to a Frontend Dev at product firms. Navigating this transition has been challenging due to a lack of clear guidance. I'm uncertain about how to prepare for these companies since they appear to have distinct sets of expectations. For instance, creating a portfolio that highlights my skills rather than my background is a challenge for me. Given your expertise, do you think I might be setting my sights too high considering my profile? Should I consider re-adjusting my target ? If not, how can I enhance my marketability for SDE 1 Frontend roles at product companies? Your insights would be invaluable. Thanks Subhadip

Hi Subhadip,

Firstly, employment gaps are increasingly understood in today's job market. A brief explanation in your resume suffices if asked.

For transitioning to a frontend dev role, leverage your testing experience, focusing on how it gave you insight into frontend functionalities. Highlight this in your resume for relevance.

Next, build a portfolio with projects showcasing your frontend skills. Host these on GitHub and ensure they reflect current industry standards in frontend development, like proficiency in React, JavaScript, and responsive design.

Networking is also key. Engage with frontend development communities online and attend webinars or meetups to stay updated and make connections. You can also start with friends/friends of friends.

Remember, your past experience in testing is valuable, offering a unique perspective to frontend development. Stay focused on your learning path and don't hesitate to showcase your progress through projects.
