Mentee Question
There seem to be so many behavioral interview questions. How can I prepare for them in the most efficient way?

Answered By Mentor Mohit Gupta
Understand the purpose of behavioral questions. These are mostly to judge your fitment for the team and org culture. A useful aspect is that many behavioral attributes are common across organizations.
Hence, it makes sense to have a list of behavioral aspects that most companies evaluate and prepare for these.
- Prepare your stories and real-life examples.
- Usually, 4-5 good examples cover most of the areas.
- Prepare well on these and use them with little tweaking for most.
Preparing answers is important in the right format (STAR). Even if it takes writing these on paper, practice answers by recording and revising more to make it impactful.
Usually, practice with someone helps in such areas.

Preparing for behavioral interview questions can indeed be overwhelming due to the variety of potential questions that can be asked. However, with a structured approach, you can efficiently prepare for these types of interviews. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you:
1. Understand the job requirements: Review the job description and note the key skills, qualifications, and qualities the employer is seeking. This will give you an idea of the behavioral competencies they might be looking for.
2. Identify common behavioral competencies: Recognize the core competencies typically assessed in behavioral interviews, such as teamwork, problem-solving, leadership, communication, adaptability, conflict resolution, and decision-making. Consider the competencies most relevant to the job you're applying for.
3. Recall past experiences: Think about your previous experiences, both professional and personal, where you demonstrated these competencies. Focus on situations that resulted in positive outcomes or valuable lessons learned. These experiences will serve as the basis for your answers during the interview.
4. Use the STAR method: The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is an effective framework for structuring your answers to behavioral questions. For each experience, describe the Situation or Task, the Action you took, and the Result or outcome. This method helps you provide a clear and concise response.
5. Research sample questions: Look for a list of common behavioral interview questions online. This will give you a sense of the types of questions you might encounter. Focus on questions that relate to the competencies you identified in step 2.
6. Practice your answers: Take time to practice your responses to the sample questions using the STAR method. Rehearse your answers out loud, ensuring they are concise, focused, and highlight your accomplishments. Consider recording yourself or practicing with a friend to receive feedback.
7. Review your resume and accomplishments: Refresh your memory about the details on your resume, paying attention to specific accomplishments, projects, or challenges you faced in previous roles. Connect these experiences to the competencies you've identified.
8. Seek feedback and conduct mock interviews: Reach out to friends, family, or mentors to conduct mock interviews with you. Their feedback can help you refine your answers, identify areas for improvement, and enhance your overall interview performance.
9. Stay up to date with industry trends: Research recent developments in your industry or field of interest. This will demonstrate your enthusiasm and knowledge during the interview and help you provide relevant examples when answering behavioral questions.
10. Remain calm and confident: On the day of the interview, take deep breaths, stay positive, and project confidence. Remember that your preparation has equipped you to answer behavioral questions effectively. Listen attentively to the interviewer and respond thoughtfully.
By following these steps, you can efficiently prepare for behavioral interview questions and increase your chances of showcasing your skills and experiences in the best possible light. Good luck with your interview!
