Mentee Question
Is it difficult to get into Google, Facebook, or Apple?
Mentors Answer
Answered By Mentor Aryan Rathod
Consumer-facing product companies find designers who have an eye for detail along with depth in their thoughts and showcase the same in their portfolios.
These are applied throughout the design process where designers aid in:
- Discovering the current service ecosystem
- Identify key experience gaps
- Align user and business needs
- Sketch usable workflows with delightful interactions
- Deliver mock-ups with pixel-perfect interfaces
Thus, these designers are professionally proficient in Service Design, Interaction Design, and Visual Design with mastery in at least one. Acquiring these skills is an active process of upskilling that takes place even after getting selected for these companies which only a select few grasp and act on in the industry due to a series of personal and professional reasons.
The current market correction has made the act of securing such a job much more difficult than it already was, but this has opened a very flourishing avenue for ex-MAANG designers to lead smaller design pods/divisions at up-and-coming series A/B startups. Such series A/B startups thus become a good career break-in opportunity for freshers and career pivots.
