Want to be a Data Analyst, but don't like to code? Here is your guide

A roadmap to your no code journey towards data analytics and consulting career.

Let us first understand the overview of companies in India. Companies can broadly be divided into two types:

  • Established companies: Established companies have enough capital with them and need to respond quickly to their clients. They are not interested in the research of techniques and theory of analytics or ML. Their only goal is to get the insights as quickly as possible. These companies have established business processes and they follow a set of approach but are open to innovation to some extent. These company mostly use licensed tools. (There maybe some exceptions to this, such as those companies that are working on building new products.)
    • Startups: Startups provide unique solutions to their clients at low cost. The only way startups can compete with the established players is either by offering a lower cost or by adapting quickly to the latest technologies. Established organisations would take a long time to adapt to the newer technologies. Hence, startups mostly use open source tools. (Again there could be exceptions.)

Now, startups/established organisations can further be divided into four broad categories: Product based, Market research, Consulting & Analytics service providers. In these companies, the roles that are more inclined towards ML might require more programming knowledge. For instance, if a company is building a product for Natural Language Processing (eg. Quid), it might require heavy programming knowledge.

But there are many companies which are more interested in generating insights from data. If you target those companies, you might get away with little or no programming knowledge. I say “get away” because I feel that it makes you really valuable, if you can leverage open source tools to generate similar insights, that are normally done using licensed tools.

Let us now look at some basic types of analysis and tools that are popular in industry:

      Data Analytics Tools

Some of the analysis that is done in the industry is mentioned above. This is by no means an exhaustive list, it is just to give you an idea.

You can see that any analysis can be done using just R or Python. This is the reason why R/Python is so popular and powerful. But having said that, if you are not comfortable with programming, there are plenty of other popular tools that can do the same job for you.

So, if programming is something that you don’t like, don’t worry about it. But if you really want to be invincible, then you should give it a try, maybe you would love it.
