Struggling with burnout? These 10 practical time management habits will help you regain balance, boost productivity, and take back control of your day.

Lately, I’ve been speaking to a lot of people about 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 — one of those evergreen topics that we all struggle with, no matter how experienced we are.
As a Senior Software Engineer, I’ve realized that how you manage your time has a huge impact — not just on productivity, but on peace of mind.
🔟 Here are 10 time management habits that have genuinely worked for me and the people I mentor:
Time management isn’t just about getting more done — it’s about doing the right things, in a way that’s aligned with your values, goals, and energy. Here are 10 practical tips that have helped me and many of my mentees take back control of their time and make the most of their days.
⏳ 1. Own All of Your Time
Your time is entirely yours. When you say “I don’t have time,” what you often mean is “It’s not a priority.” That shift in mindset is powerful — it puts you back in control. You are not a victim of your calendar; you are its architect.
✅ 2. “Hell Yeah” or No
Borrowed from Derek Sivers, this principle is simple: if an opportunity doesn’t excite you deeply, say no. Your “kind of yes” is someone else’s "hell yeah" — so leave space for the right things to come in.
🌟 3. The Daily Highlight
Every day, pick one thing that, if accomplished, would make you feel great. This isn't about cramming everything in — it’s about ensuring one meaningful moment or task shines through.
📝 4. Use a To-Do List
Your brain isn’t for storage, it’s for creativity. Offload your thoughts and tasks onto a list. Whether you use Notion, paper, or Post-its, just write it down and free up that precious mental space.
📅 5. Time Blocking
Don’t just make a list — schedule the list. Block time on your calendar, especially for your daily highlight, and treat those blocks as sacred appointments with yourself.
⏱️ 6. Set Artificial Deadlines (Parkinson’s Law)
Tasks expand to fill the time you give them. So give them less time. Set a timer and challenge yourself to complete things faster than you think. You’ll be amazed at how much focus this creates.
🔒 7. Have Protected Time
Your mornings (or any time when you're most alert) should be sacred. No calls, no distractions, just deep work or calm personal time. Even 90 minutes of protected time can change your entire day.
📤 8. Delegate with Intention
Your time has value. If someone can do something for ₹500/hr and your time is worth ₹2000/hr, delegate it. This isn't about laziness; it's about using your energy where it matters most — in your zone of genius.
🔁 9. Automate Scheduling
Cut down endless “What time works for you?” emails. Tools like Calendly or Google Calendar appointment slots allow others to book directly, giving you back hours each week.
🙌 10. Choose to Be Satisfied
We’re often harsh on ourselves at the end of the day. Instead of focusing on what’s left undone, choose to celebrate what did get done. End your day with a win — even if it's just showing up.
If even one of these resonates with you, I’d love to hear which one — or what’s worked for you.
