Deepesh’s Transition From Software Engineering to Data Science

Know how Deepesh successfully transitioned from software engineering to data science with mentor-led preparation and advice.⭐

Meet Deepesh Sharma, a software engineer who successfully made a career transition into Data Science with the help of mentorship and strategic preparation

Here Deepesh shares his journey and how he achieved his career goal by embracing a structured approach and focusing on key concepts.✨

Let's dive into the details and learn what made this victory possible. :)

Can you tell us about your initial journey and why you decided to switch careers?

Initially, I worked as an associate software engineer in data science-related projects.

However, as the field rapidly expanded, I needed to upskill myself to keep up with the latest technologies and advancements.

The projects at my current organisation matured, and I wanted to explore new challenges and make a more significant impact in the data science domain.

I decided to switch careers to enhance my skills and explore new opportunities.

You mentioned many resources are available for learning, but you felt overwhelmed. How did mentorship help you in this aspect?

Absolutely.

The abundance of resources online made it difficult for me to figure out where to start and what to focus on.

Mentorship played a crucial role in streamlining my learning process.

Hitesh Hinduja, my mentor, planned each step of my preparation and guided me on what to learn and how to learn it effectively.

His mentoring helped me focus on the most relevant topics and avoid getting lost in the sea of information.

You can learn anything on the internet for free. But, out of all that content, only 1% aligns with your goals and learning needs.

You must know how to pick that 1% to avoid wasting your time and energy!

Could you elaborate on how your mentor helped you track your progress and assist with revision?

Hitesh introduced a Google sheet that became an invaluable tool in my preparation.

After learning a concept, I would jot down the critical points in the sheet.

It summarised what I had learned, making it easier for me to revise and refresh my memory.

Additionally, the sheet allowed me to mark topics where I had doubts or confusion, ensuring I could prioritise revision effectively.

This way, the sheet served as task management and a revision tool, optimising my learning process.

How did mentorship help you improve your resume and increase your interview opportunities?

Hitesh provided invaluable insights on crafting an effective resume.

He emphasised the importance of clarity and simplicity in resume presentation.✨

Instead of going for complex designs, he advised me to focus on content that applicant tracking systems used by companies would easily capture.

By reformatting my resume and presenting my projects in a three-step format he suggested, I drastically reduced the chances of rejection.

Additionally, Hitesh guided me in updating my LinkedIn profile and expanding my network, further increasing my interview opportunities.

How did your mentor help you speed up your job search and identify the right opportunities?

As mentioned earlier, Hitesh helped me create an optimised LinkedIn profile that recruiters loved.

Because of that, I got the chance to talk to many relevant people.

Networking played a crucial role in accelerating my job search.

Building a solid social connection on LinkedIn helped me stay updated with job opportunities and engage with recruiters directly.

Hitesh guided me on reaching out to recruiters and managers hiring for roles relevant to my interests.

Because of this, I could quickly identify job openings that matched my skills and apply with a higher chance of success.😄

It's essential to be proactive and reach out to potential employers when opportunities arise, even during times of hiring freeze!

What was the duration of your long-term mentorship, and how was it structured?

My long-term mentorship with Hitesh lasted for three months.

We mostly met on weekends since we both had full-time jobs to juggle.

During each session, he set specific tasks to complete, guiding me through the learning process.

We discussed my progress, doubts, and strategies to improve my skill set.

The structured approach and regular meetings helped me stay focused and on track.✨

Can you describe your experience during the interview process, especially when you first started getting opportunities?

The initial interview experience was nerve-wracking!

Even though I had prepared well with my mentor, I felt anxious and struggled to present my knowledge confidently.

Getting interview calls was a slow process, taking up to six months after applying to hundreds of jobs.

But with practice and more interviews, my confidence gradually improved.

How did you overcome the nervousness and improve your performance during interviews?

Overcoming nervousness was a challenge, but my mentor's advice was to keep giving more interviews and practise mock interviews regularly.

That's precisely what I did!

The more interviews I attended, the more comfortable and confident I became in showcasing my skills and knowledge.

How was your experience during the final interview where you received an offer?

The final interview went great!

With newfound confidence, I felt at ease during the interview, and the time flew by.

The interviewer started with basic questions, then delved into my project details, and finally, I was given some Python questions and a dataset for data analysis.

How did you feel when you received your first job offer?

Receiving my first job offer was a moment of relief and excitement.

I felt like I could finally relax and enjoy life.😊

I celebrated with close friends and went on a break to unwind and refresh.

Even though I'm still interviewing with multiple companies, I still need to finalise my decision.

I'm focusing on upskilling to be better prepared for any opportunity that comes my way.

Hitesh is helping with that. :)

What would you like to thank your mentor, Hitesh, for, in a brief message?

I want to thank Hitesh for all his efforts to mentor me, especially for his patience and faith in my abilities

At times he’d be a little strict, but that’s what helped me stay on track!

His guidance helped me secure a successful job opportunity, and I am genuinely grateful for that.😊

If you were to select one thing that the mentorship with Hitesh helped you with the most, what would it be?

Clarity.

Hitesh clarified my learning journey, keeping me on track and focused on my goals.

It’s very easy to get lost on your own.

What advice would you give others in a similar situation looking to upskill and switch to a better role?

The journey of upskilling and job hunting is a slow and challenging process.

Keep confidence and focus on your learning journey at your own pace.

Avoid comparing yourself with others and trust in your abilities. Keep practising, and success will come.⭐
