I am currently a mentee at Preplaced preparing for a Frontend role.
I am getting mentored by Shubham Soni, an experienced Frontend Developer and a Mentor at Preplaced.
Before I tell you about the mentor-led preparation, here’s a little bit about me and my journey till now. 👇
I am not satisfied with my current role as a developer.
There is a sense of stagnation and unfulfillment.
Going through this monotonous work life, I met a senior who had recently switched. He got his dream job with a really good package.
Listening to him made me motivated.
I too wanted a better job with better pay. Even with almost 2 years of experience, I realised I was getting the bare minimum.
I tried preparing myself but it was difficult to understand where to start.
There was no direction. I had no idea about what might be asked and what the interview process will be.
This is when I realised that guidance from a professional would be helpful.
I came to know about Preplaced while searching for mentoring platforms.
Preplaced is a mentor-led platform connecting mentees with experienced professionals in the industry.
It was here that I had the privilege of connecting with Shubham Soni, a seasoned frontend engineer at Amazon.
Since there was the option to have a free trial session with the selected mentor, I went ahead as there was nothing to lose.
When I connected with Shubham, I instantly felt a connection. 💫
So, with a mix of excitement and determination, I committed to a 3-month long mentorship journey with Shubham.
So far, it's been absolutely great. I have made significant progress with Shubham’s guidance.
Now that you know a little bit about me, let's take a look at the day in my life as a Preplaced Mentee.
Waking up and getting ready for the office, I feel a mixture of excitement and determination.
It's because I am preparing for my future. There is something to look forward to.
I remind myself that today is another step forward in my journey towards a more fulfilling career.
Before going to the office, I check my emails and messages for any updates or instructions from my mentor, Shubham.
I drop him a text to confirm today’s meeting. He promptly responds with a yes.
The fact that I have someone so experienced and supportive in my corner gives me the confidence to face any challenges that come my way.
Reviewing the schedule for the day, I feel a surge of motivation.
Each task and meeting is an opportunity for growth and progress.
As I glance at the tasks assigned by my current role, I'm reminded of why I'm seeking this mentorship.
It's the key to unlocking my true potential and finding greater satisfaction in my professional life.
When I come back home, it's time for me to meet with Shubham.
The session usually starts with “How am I doing?”, “How far am I on the projects?”, “Any blockers I have faced?” and so on.
During our meeting, Shubham takes the time to understand my goals and objectives.
He listens attentively, providing invaluable insights tailored to my aspirations.
Shubham's ability to empathise and understand my desire for a more fulfilling role makes our mentorship all the more impactful.
Last week I stumbled upon a few problems that I wanted clarity on.
As we delve into the discussion, I learned new perspectives and ways to solve the problem. It is great discussing your interest with someone who returns the same energy.
I also seek clarification and guidance on the tasks or projects assigned to me.
I am currently working on a front-end UI project.
Receiving feedback on my previous work is another highlight of our mentor meetings.
Shubham takes the time to review my progress and provides constructive criticism.
After my last mock session, the feedback included working more on Arrays.
Although it can be challenging to hear about areas where I need improvement, I understand that it's an important part of my growth.
Shubham's guidance and support motivate me to push myself further, ensuring that I continue to learn and excel.
In everyday sessions, he tells me to think big and not undermine myself.
As we wrap up our meeting, Shubham and I discuss the next day and time for our next session.
His dedication to setting up regular check-ins demonstrates his commitment to my success.
It's a comforting thought to know that I have a mentor who believes in me and is willing to invest their time and expertise to help me achieve my goals.
After the meeting, I eagerly dive into the assigned tasks and projects.
He has also shared a bunch of resources with me that I can refer to.
Whether it's an informative article or a useful tutorial, I know that these resources are carefully curated to enhance my learning experience.
This makes my work a whole lot easier as I don’t have to spend my time searching on the internet for solutions.
If I do encounter challenges or uncertainties along the way, I reach out to Shubham for assistance.
He always replies promptly. I'm grateful for the instant feedback and support I receive from him.
After I am done with my tasks, I take a moment to reflect on the progress I've made.
The mentorship with Shubham has become a beacon of hope and inspiration in my professional life.
It's during these quiet moments of introspection that I recognise how far I have come.
During my reflection, I identify my strengths and areas for improvement.
Mentorship has made me self-aware.
I review the updated goals and strategies devised with Shubham.
In my updates to Shubham, I make sure to share my progress and accomplishments.
If I encounter challenges or require further guidance, I'm not hesitant to reach out.
Shubham's unwavering support and immediate responses foster a sense of trust and assurance in our mentorship.
I also take a moment to prepare for our next mentor meeting.
I review any notes I've taken, ensuring that I capture any questions or topics I wish to discuss with Shubham.
This preparation ensures that our time together is well-utilised, maximising the value I derive from his guidance.
I close my laptop and get ready to recharge for the next day.
With each passing day, I grow closer to realising my true potential, all thanks to the invaluable support and guidance I receive from my mentor.
It's already been a month since I started my mentorship journey.
At first, I was a little bit intimated and was not sure if I’ll be able to handle both my job and mentor-led preparation.
But now, it just feels like a part of my day, a usual routine. Every day I dedicate a few hours after work to strengthen my skills.
I can proudly say that the ‘me’ of today is a whole lot different and better than the past ‘me’. 😇
This mentorship has been transformative.
I have gained a deeper understanding of frontend engineering and can already envision myself in the role.
The mentorship journey has taught me the value of self-reflection and setting clear goals.
To future mentees, I encourage you to seek out a mentor who can guide you towards your aspirations.
Remember, success is not achieved in isolation but through the support and wisdom of those who have walked the path before you.
I know that the best is yet to come. 💪
